Few cities in the world offer so much variety of landscape, Auckland is a beautiful place and I love it! The images here are the culmination of multiple trips over many months, up at early hours and long days spent in search of iconic images to do justice to this great place. I'm proud to say I was born here and am very passionate about what I do, whether it's wading through muddy mangroves or climbing trees for a better view, a degree of madness helps a lot!
I have personally printed all of the "Vistas of Auckland" images onto 100% cotton-rag fine art paper using an HP Z3100 printer, utilising archival pigment inks. These will resist fading for many generations, so you can feel confident to hang them in a sunny space with confidence.
All of the images were shot using a Mamiya medium format camera with a 31Mp Phase One digital back, and many of the files are in fact "stitched" together (joining several images to create one.) This gets a little tricky when one is bracketing exposures at the same time, but the results allow one to enlarge these images to enormous sizes and retain immense detail. I have carried out some post production work to restore the scene to what my eyes remember, so I trust the end result speaks for itself.
There are some people who still think that film is superior to digital, but if Ansel Adams were still alive today, I'm sure he would have embraced digital technology too. The complicated dodging and burning that he used to carry out in his darkroom is really no different to what one does via computer today, a complicated and time consuming skill in it's own right!
It's an enormous privilege to travel the length and breadth of New Zealand in search of inspiring images and I often pinch myself when Im staring at what I know is some of the worlds finest scenery, just another day at the office! Those unique moments when you just happen to be in the right place at the right time are quite rare and it takes a lot of hard work and luck to let them happen, but when they do its quite amazing. In reality, I spend most of my time buried in my studio developing images or keeping up with production.
I was a keen photographer from an early age, but didn’t turn professional until 1989 when I embarked on a bicycle expedition of the South Island, along with 20kg
of camera equipment! A self-taught photographer, I spent many years travelling the world as a photographer on cruise ships, returning to N.Z in 2003, when I began
experimenting with images on canvas. Most of my work highlights the diverse beauty of N.Z’s grand landscape and flora. Today, Air New Zealand’s business class
“Koru” lounges feature my work and pieces are displayed on the set of the television show “Good Morning” each weekday. Pieces are avidly collected in N.Z and
shipped around the world, collectors include the family of the famous Swedish camera manufacturer, Hasselblad.
